New York Noir Vintage crime scene photos from The New York Daily News. (Can it GET any better than this?)

FSA and OWI Photography Wow. What an incredible website. Collected here, for the very first time, are ALL the evocotive and iconic photographs comissioned by the FSA (Farm Security Administration Office) and the OWI (Office of War Information) taken during The Great Depression. If you're riding a Dust Bowl vibe (as I am this week) and want to transport yourself back to the rural 1930s, then this is the site to visit. (WARNING: May cause depression and/or severe hunger pangs.)

Chinese Propaganda Poster Pages Stefan Landsberger has compiled the absolute definitive site of Chinese Proganda posters. We love this kinda stuff!

Decameron Web Everything you need to know about Boccaccio's 14th century masterpiece, The Decameron. Forget your Chaucer, THIS is the guy !

Agatha Christie: The Official Online Home The butler NEVER did it.

Art Deco Society The world is divided into two sorts of people; Art Nouveau and Art Deco. We at KIU are firmly in the latter. Join us for 'un coup de champagne' on the cyber steamship of the Art Deco Society. ('Anyone for tennis?')

Futurism and the Futurists Bob Osbourne's beautiful and absolutely definite site on the Italian Futurist Movement c. 1909.  Even if Boccioni, Carra, Balla et al don't twist your marbles, this extensive and well designed site is never-the-less worth a visit. It is truly unique. (And you will also find Amanda's Futurism term-paper there.)  Futurism and the Futurists is, quite simply, the best modern art site ever. BRAVISSIMA, Bob!

Tate Gallery The Tate Galleries' amazingly wonderful website, this easy-to-navigate site holds the 'best of the best' of British Art from the 19th Century to Present.  Just type in the name of your favourite artist (who should be Peter Blake) and voila; you're presented with thumbnails of all his oeuvre, easy to upload and save as a free 'wallpaper'.  Classy.  Very, very classy.

Christian Schad Whilst this site is written in a strange tongue and hails from one of those odd, cold places, it is without a doubt the best site on Amanda's favourite artist, Christian Schad. Explore the disturbing world of Weimar's greatest painter! (And that's not a suggestions - it's an order!)

DaDa Online Ah, that golden era when Art went DAFT. It's all here. Just click to get your head done-in.

Marcel Duchamp World Community The definitive site on Amanda's ultimate hero, Marcel Duchamp.

Why A Duck? The Definitive Marx Brothers Site I'd never be a member of a webring that would have me.

Ukulele Lesson The most 'unintentionally funny' site of all time, this Japanese self-help guide to ukulele playing is a true gem (includes tips on how to prevent friends and family 'making sour face' when you play.) Priceless!

How Jell-O(R) Killed the Dinosaurs A well researched (if somewhat controversial) revisionist theory on dinosaur extinction.  Whilst there are still some questions surrounding this bold new theory, the scientific groundwork is predominantly sound.

John Shuttleworth! Ooff! Amanda and Caitlyn love John Shuttleworth! This best website celebrating the most brilliant program in Radio 4 history.  Find out more about John Shuttleworth (the singer, songwriter, radio host, and DIY fan), his family, and his next door neighbor/impressario Ken Worthington, shop for Shuttleworth memorabilia, and download clips of the show.

Waiting For Guffman 'Well then I just HATE you and I hate your ASS FACE!' Amanda and Sunny's all-time favourite movie celebrated here on it's official site! ('And there's only one other person who can do all that - and that's Barbra Striesand.)

• GROWN-UP STUFF •

New York Noir Vintage crime scene photos from The New York Daily News. (Can it GET any better than this?)

BBC - Crime - Crimewatch Help fight U.K crime (and scare yourself silly) by visiting the Crimewatch website. ("Don't have nightmares.")

Crime Library At last. A fully comprehensive, scary and oft-repulsive site dealing with one of my true, great loves - True Life Crime. Be sure to check out the 'Truly Weird and Shocking' bit of the Serial Killer section. "Don't have nightmares". (Nick Ross joke only applicable to U.K)

Andrew Marvell (1621-1678) 'If we had but world enough, and time' to actually write something ourselves about Andrew Marvell. But we don't (and don't particularly want to), yet as he's the only poet Amanda has ever vaguely liked, here's a link!

[Un]Natural Appetites Discover how fun queer theory can be!  Features an easy-to-follow explanation of the theory and concise yet insightful discussions on several 'queer' films (the page on Heavenly Creatures is particularly good).  Best of all, the site features tasty recipes for creating the perfect queer meal. Caitlyn thinks this is an invaluable resource for all literature and film students.

• HEROES & IDOLS •

Robert Benchley Society The funniest man who ever lived, American humourist Robert Benchley is honoured as he should be on David's fabulously comprehensive site. Ever wondered about the Sex Life of the Polyp? Then look no further!

Dorothy Parker Amanda's ultimate role model - and that about just says it all.

George Orwell If I could be anyone else, I'd be George Orwell. And that just about says it all. My ultimate hero, George Orwell was just the best writer, the best person, the best human being EVER - and I just love him loads, basically.

Cinema Sirens Stuart's stylish and sumptuous site pays homage to a whole host of KIU role models, those celluloid sex symbols of the '50s, '60s and '70s. Packed with pictures and biographies, Cinema Sirens is more than just a tribute site - it's also a video store, selling even the rarest of films by your favourite femmes. Highly recommended by the Kittens in Underpants.

Andrew Loog Odlham Legendary impresario Andrew Loog Oldham has been a very kind to Kittens in Underpants. Please check out his website and make sure you read the first two parts of his sensational autobiography, 'Stoned' and '2Stoned'. The man behind The Small Faces, Marianne Faithful and - of course - The Rollings Stones, Andrew has a lot of exciting projects on the go, and a visit to his website will leave you wanting more!

Mark Lester's Carlton Clinic Our idol Mark Lester's own osteopathy and acupuncture clinic. Is there NOTHING that dancing orphan can't do?! Mark has been a wonderful friend to Kittens in Underpants, and he is - and always will be - our very favourite actor.

Swingin' Chicks of the 1960s If you want to see Amanda and Caitlyn's role models, they're all here in this beautifully compiled site dedicated to the groovy gals and brilliant birds who put the 'swing' in 'Sixties'!

• MUSIC •

Dismuke's Virtual Talking Machine Dismuke is a prince amongst men. Why? Because he has compiled a site of original (and scratchy) music recordings from the 1920s and '30s. Not only can you listen to his 24 hour radio station via the Net, but you can also DOWNLOAD this fabulous, impossible-to-find music! He actually ENCOURAGES you to do so! Talk about the right spirit, Dismuke is to fans of Early Recording what Saint Frances was to Assisi.

Argentine Tango Everything you need to know about my new hobby.

Chord house Wow. This site gets the Site for Sore Eyes Prize! For anyone out there who plays guitar (or tries to), the Chord House is your one-stop portal to playing pleasure! As you select your chord, you not only see the instant finger formation, but actually HEAR the chord being played! Brilliant. Just BRILLIANT. (NOTE: Doesn't help people with small fingers.)

The Django Reinhardt Swing Page Everything you need to know about gypsy jazz legend, Django Reinhardt.

Taraf de Haidouks Amanda's latest musical obsession, this page offers some - not much - but some information on this fabulously mental gypsy band. Comprised of musicians ranging in age from 14 to 84, the Taraf de Haidouks have music so insane that it'll make you rethink every idea you've ever had about...well...EVERYTHING, basically. Wonderfully evocotive (though of WHAT I'm not sure!), if I make one musical recommendation to you this year, it would be Taraf de Haidouks. Life will never be the same again.

New Blondie Book The first book on Blondie in over twenty years, Allan Metz touches up Debbie's roots with the definitive look at New Wave's greatest band.

Girl Groups Caitlyn and Amanda practically ARE a 'girl group' (in spirit, at least), and Chuck's comprehensive site tells you everything you need to know about the Sixties 'Girl Group' phenomenon, as well as offering THE most extensive links list on the planet. ("See the way Chuck walks down the street, See the way Chuck shuffles his feet....").

Jammin Reggae Archives Dis be Dr Bob of da Kinston Masses, and Jammin Reggae Archives be my favourite site, mon.  Respect!  This site got everything that me n' me Poison Floowah need ta know about da reggae, mon, as well as lots a' bits n' bobs about me cooltcha.  Top rankin'. Respect. (Jah.).

Pop Theory This site's mantra is: 'Social theory for fans of popular culture.  Popular culture for fans of social theory.'  Do you watch 'Friends'? Are you a fan of the Spice Girls?  Are you puzzled by Foucault?  Do you find Judith Butler's prose completely intelligible?  If you said 'yes' to any of the following questions, click on this link immediately!  The site explains queer theory, feminism, post-structuralism, and other social theories through the use of Madonna videos and fashion magazines.  Its both easy to understand and surprisingly funny.  Particularly notable are the social theorist trading cards and the Foucault action figure with removable French cloak.

Traditional Folk Song, 1500-1900 "Ye Jacobites by name, lend an ear, lend an ear..." Okay, we can't really say that this site 'rocks', but what it DOES do is provide an absolutely exhaustive 'one-stop' guide to traditional folk songs from the Renaissance to the 19th century, each with complete lyrics, history (if known) and MP3 sound file. Amanda particularly likes the 18th century ballads about pirates and highwayman (she's always liked 'bad boys'), as well as the songs (both for and against) the Jacobite Rebellion. In fact, Amanda is the only member of KIU to like ANY of this site. Or any of this music.

Graham Gouldman Things John 'gives us everything and more - and that's for sure' in his absolutely extensive website devoted to Amanda's favourite songwriter, Graham Gouldman. Biography, discography and loads of nifty pics, John's site is the one-stop pop portal for Britain's grooviest composer.

Medieval Music Links If Medieval Music twists your marbles, then this plainsong portal is right up your street. (Chain-mail and wimples required for entree.)

The Tapestry Of Delights At last (and thank God), Vernon Johnson's definitive encyclopedia of British Pop and Rock (1963-1976) is cyber-active. The book form of Johnson's opus has long been revered in Amanda's house, and now it is available on Internet for all to enjoy and explore. Joynson has (somehow!) put together an alphabetic discography and biography on EVERY BAND WHO EVER RELEASED A RECORD IN GREAT BRITAIN from 1963-1976! Do not question how (or indeed, why) he has done this - but we're awfully glad that he has! A tremendous 'life's-work'; Joynson should be canonized.

Popmeter Sixties Jukebox. If Sixties pop means something a little more avant-garde than Gerry and the Pacemakers, then Popmeter is the place for you! Freak-beat, Garage, Psyche and Le Pop Francais are all here - and it's great looking, too. Popmeter comes highly recommended by THIS rock chick!

• OFF-BEAT •

Dangerous Sea Animals Cap'n Craig S. Nelson (Comannding Officer) talks us through the worst of the worst.

Nurple I can make neither head nor tail of this site, but if you like Carnival Freaks, Free Animation, Pickled Punks, Music Downloads, Parasitic Twins, and Various Assorted Weird Shit, then NURPLE (which I believe isb ased in Tampa) is your one stop portal to...um...all this kinda stuff.

Weegee's World If you know who Weegee is, then you'll know why to click this link. And if you don't...go find out.

Danceteria Flyers Okay, I know this a bit 'FriendsReunited' (sad, in other words), but boy - did this website bring back memories! I worked at the legendary Danceteria in the early '80s (I was the office girl - GIRL being the operative word, darlings: I was but a child) and actually remember Danceteria's art guy (the lovely Miguel) sitting at the desk opposite mine and desiging many of the flyers shown here. Ah, those were the days (but I was FAT then, so I'd rather block them out.)

La Fée Verte The ultimate guide to Amanda's new obsession: absinthe.

The Patron Web Journal - Romania (Gypsy) Culture and History Definitive 'starter pack' on Amanda's 'people', The Romanies.

Sideshow Freaks Roll up, roll up - for the weirdest show in town. Everything from Siamese twins to Lobster Boys, and all presented with the dignity these interesting people deserved.

AntCam Updated every fifteen seconds, technology has now allowed us to watch in (almost) 'real time' the antics of ants. Can you spot the queen ant? I can't. Last time I looked, four ants were involving themselves with some sort of larvae. WARNING: This site is only suitable for people who are really into ANTS (everyone else should just ignore it and go visit 'Propertop' or 'Futurism & the Futurists' or 'Tate Gallery Online' or something. AntCam is MINDLESS.)

Protect and Survive Based upon the original early-80s U.K government public safety booklet, this site addresses all your post-apocalyptic needs.  As informative as it is concise, Protect and Survive gives top tips as to the best way to construct a 'lean to', as well as that much needed 'check-list' of what to take into your nuclear fall-out shelter (includes illustration of cutlery.)

DeadMart Perhaps not to everyone's taste (yet certainly to Amanda's), Deadmart is your 'one-stop' guide to everything 'True Life Crime'.  Serial killers, F.B.I lists, autopsy reports - it's all here (and the guy who runs it is a real sweety, the scary subject matter notwithstanding.)

Trader Woody's Home Simon's definite guide to Euro-Tiki and Cocktail Bar culture is simply a 'must-have'.  No matter where in Europe you're headed, if there's a hint of Tiki to be had, Simon ('Trader Woody') has the low-down.  Furthermore, he's a really nice bloke, so VISIT THIS SITE!

Medieval Woodcuts Clipart Collection Amanda once spent ninety-nine hours looking for clipart of woodcuts; so just in case you're in the same predicament.....This is a wonderfully original site, and testimony that some people still have good taste (not us at KIU, though, of course.)

The Towering Inferno Archive This picture-packed site pays tribute to the greatest movie of all time (or at least of 1974.)  If you don't own the video and want to 'relive' the excitement, just pop along to this website (and don't worry, it's 'not higher than the 7th floor').

Chupa Chups The best looking website in town (after KIU), Chupa Chups is our very favourite lollipop; even Serge loves 'em! Chupa Chups, the world's best-selling lollipop.

Christopher-Hill.com As Chris puts it himself, his site is 'a bit like the internet, but less shit.' If you lack the time and/or energy to search the net for 'the good stuff', just visit Christopher-Hill.com; all the 'good stuff' is already there.

• PLACES •

Buenos Aires When I 'bolt', it'll be for here. (With no for-warding address.)

Paris - Arrondisment par Arrondisment This utterly amazing site works thus: put your cursor on more or less any metro station on the map, and if it turns into a little hand, click. You'll be taken to photographs of the arrondisment of your choice. What nutter put this together?! And WHAT a labour of love. Sadly, none of the photos make Paris look too special - but as we all know it IS - let's simply say 'Chapeau!' whoever put this site together. (And I bet he's got a Carte d'Orange.)

• SPECIAL FRIENDS •

Cranberry, The Juice & Booze Bar Our friend Chris's fab and funky bar in the centre of Swinging Zurich. Known as 'The Warmest Berry in the World', make Cranberry Bar the first place you hit in Zurich.

Suzi Quatro Our ultimate rock-chick role model, Suzi's career has spanned the glittering days of glam rock to West End stage to her own chart-topping radio show. A special friend to Kittens in Underpants (check out our interview section), Suzi still looks gorgeous and still rocks with the best of 'em!

David Soul The hipper half of 'Starksy and Hutch' and chart-topping pop star, David Soul went on to enjoy a glittering career as one of British theatres most popular luminaries. Other career highpoints include his interview with Kittens in Underpants. A relentless campaigner for animal rights, David is a top bloke and a totally nice man.

Tepid Fish Productions Music, videos, movies, comedy, ladies, laughs: the Baltimore-based all girl do-whatever-we-want, whenever-we-feel-like-doing-it troupe of artists, writers, performers, film makers and abstract thinkers.

Motel Fetish Kittens in Underpant's very best friend Chas Ray Krider's wonderful website, dedicated to the photographers penchant for the best looking gals this side of 1962. As delightful as he is talented, please visit Chas Ray's wonderful world - we promise that you'll be glad that you did!

Neemo's Comfortable Place Photographer and artist Naeem Bawani's brilliant photographs truly capture the happening, Manchester scene. Obviously, we at KIU are nothing to do with Manchester, but Naeem is one of Amanda's oldest friends, and the nicest guy in the North.

Peter Noone Yes! The artist formally known as 'Herman' is another great star who has been a friend to Kittens in Underpants, and his wonderful website is full of fun and frolics.

The Progeria Research Foundation Homepage The main organisation devoted to Hutchinson-Gilford Syndrome, The Progeria Research Foundation is desparate for volunteer translators (in any language) to translate their wonderful and inspiring newsletter for families touched by Progeria throughout the world.  (And of course, donations never hurt.)  If you can speak/write in a second language, a couple of hours a month would make all the difference to these wonderful kids.

The Cats Protection League (U.K) Lancelot and Serge's favourite site!  They too were once 'C.P.L' orphans, and this long-running charity not only has a surplus of cats and kitties in need of good homes, but relies on donations and shelter volunteers to maintain its strict 'no kill' policy.  (Also, their site is great fun for any cat lover to browse.)

General Conference Cathar Church Amanda finally found a religion she liked!

• THE PAST •

Archiving Early America Very fun site on Early American history (including music downloads and movies). All you need is a tri-cornered hat, a slab of cornbread, and a nasty attitude towards tea taxation.

The Journal of Geology, Electronic Edition Admittedly, you have to be madly into geology to enjoy The Journal of Geology online, and whilst it's a tad on the hard side (this month's issue has articles with titles like "Detrital Zircon Evidence of a Recycled Orogenic Foreland Provenance for Alleghanian Clastic-Wedge Sandstones"), I think we can all agree that The Journal of Geology ROCKS HARD. (Boom boom).

Miaaow Ladies! Want to ignite in your man the blue touch-paper of desire? Then look no further! Miaaow offers purr-fectly retro lingerie which will make you feel as if you're starring in an early '60s porn film... And can it honestly get better than that?! Liz's merchandise is stylish, kitsch, beautifully made and - most of all - SEXY. And it's worth checking out her website, too, for a tongue-in-cheek blast from the bedrooms of the past!

Voynich Manuscript Elaborate hoax or mind-blowing mystery, you decide as you take a look at this utterly baffling Medieval manuscript.

Berlin in the 1920s If Amanda could have an orgasm just by visiting a (non-porn) website, then this would be the one! From politics to art, from film to architecture, 'Berlin in the 1920s' is THE definite site for all your Weimar needs. Life is a cabaret, old chum!

TV Cream Simply the funniest and most extensive look at Retro British Television. This is 'laugh aloud' stuff to those of you who to whom the name 'Bergerac' means something (and there's even a section of defunked chocolate bars.)  Great stuff!

British Pop Culture in the 1960s Still the best, the charming Dave 'Digger' Barnes' exhaustive site is everybody's favourite 'Swinging England' portal.
