Oscar Predictions 2003
by Caitlyn Hallman

Ah yes, it’s that time of the year again when everyone goes simply mad for movies. The Oscar race is on again, and everyone has their own opinion on who is going home with the gold. Knowing that Kittens in Underpants is regarded by many to be the auditor of good taste, it seems only right that at least one kitten should toss their hat into the proverbial ring with their bets for the winners.

Here’s who I think will go home in glory:

Best Picture

The Nominees: Chicago, The Pianist, The Hours, Gangs of New York, Lord of the Rings: Two Towers

The Winner: If any of the Lord of the Rings movies were going to win an Oscar it would have been last year’s Fellowship of the Ring.  Two Towers simply does not have the buzz.

Gangs of New York is too flawed; The Pianist too small.  It’s a toss up between Chicago and The Hours. It all depends on whether Academy voters want to go with a musical or a drama, but my money is on Chicago.

Chicago

Best Actor

The Nominees: Daniel Day-Lewis, Jack Nicholson, Adrien Brody, Michael Caine, Nicolas Cage

The Winner: This category is always swamped with die hard veterans. Michael Caine and Jack Nicholson will probably cancel each other out, as they are both darlings of a certain age.  Nicolas Cage is always an Academy favorite, but I think it will be Daniel Day-Lewis’s year.  A darling of both critics and the Academy, Day-Lewis has been out of films for an age, preferring life as a cobbler in Italy. An Oscar would be the prefect way for Hollywood to welcome the return of the prodigal son.

Daniel Day-Lewis

Best Actress

The Nominees: Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Renee Zellweger, Diane Lane, Salma Hayek

The Winner: This is Nicole’s year.  The role has Oscar stamped all over it. The tragic death of a feminist icon, the Academy loves that.  It shows they are politically correct.  Kidman has to dress ugly and wear a prosthetic nose, the Academy loves that.  It shows she is a brave actress.  And she deserved to win last year for Moulin Rouge, so the Academy will want to make things up to Nicole this year.

Nicole Kidman

Best Supporting Actor

The Nominees: Chris Cooper, Christopher Walken, Paul Newman, Ed Harris, John C. Reily

The Winner: I’m going for Paul Newman.  The Academy traditionally likes to use this category to honor Hollywood veterans, and everyone likes Paul Newman.

Paul Newman

Best Supporting Actress

The Nominees: Meryl Streep, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Julianne Moore, Kathy Bates, Queen Latifah

The Winner: Could be either Meryl Streep or Catherine Zeta-Jones.  I’m going to say that it will be Zeta-Jones.  She married to Michael Douglas and he’s a big-wig at the Academy…you do the math.

Catherine Zeta-Jones

Best Director

The Nominees: Martin Scorsese, Roman Polanski, Rob Marshall, Stephen Daldy, Pedro Almodovar

The Winner:  I’ll put my bet on Martin Scorsese, although the Academy could surprise everyone and give the nod to Roman Polanski.  It depends whether the want to be controversial or not (Polanski, is a known pedophiliac, so therefore not a political correct choice but a brave one.)

Martin Scorsese
