[April 03]How to tell if you've gone too far with your love of music?

by Lisa Lunt

(If you answer “Yes, I’ve done that!” to at least 6 of the following statements, you have indeed, gone too far.)

  1. You have ever become angry with someone for talking during one of your favorite (or even semi-favorite) songs.
  2. You were subsequently forced to replay the song that was so rudely interrupted to ‘start fresh’.
  3. You can spout off random factoids about artists that you don’t even like.
  4. You became upset when one of your friends didn’t particularly like one of your favorite bands. [And you were older than 18.]
  5. You gave the above-mentioned friend the “silent treatment” for a day or two, OR wrote them a letter outlining the reasons why they SHOULD like your favorite band. [And you were older than 18.]
  6. You have ever tenderly stroked the cover of a record, cassette or CD.
  7. Making mix tapes/CDs for friends is your way of showing affection.
  8. You become extremely agitated when someone sings the lyrics of a song incorrectly.
  9. A song has made you cry—NOT because it held sentimental value or the lyrics were particularly touching—but because the song itself was…BEAUTIFUL.
  10. You have a music “want list” [often typed, in alphabetical order] on your person at all times to prevent “music store paralysis”. [The condition where you enter a music store and are so overcome with excitement that you cannot remember a single record that you want to buy.]
  11. You have more than one copy of the same record, CD or cassette, but refuse to part with either copy. Otherwise known as the “one for show, one for blow” syndrome.
